Poole Jujitsu heads to the East Coast

The East Coast Jujitsu Course and Championships in Skegness on November 4th saw a significant gathering of high-grade instructors from various regions across the UK, including Poole Jujitsu Club’s Sensei Andy Walker, 6th Dan, who was accompanied by Sensei Karen Nuttall, 1st Dan. They played pivotal roles right from the start as they opened the event with a captivating demonstration of throwing techniques. Following the demonstration, they took to the mat to teach the junior members imparting valuable skills.

Sensei Andy and Sensei Karen’s involvement didn’t stop there. They took on the roles of officiating at the afternoon competition. Their presence and active engagement highlighted their commitment to the Jujitsu community and their dedication to nurturing the next generation of martial artists.

Among the standout achievements at the event was the remarkable performance of junior member Reuben from Poole Jujitsu Club. Reuben’s skills and determination earned him two gold medals in Continuous Fighting and Ground Fighting. His accomplishments were a testament to the promising talent emerging within the world of Jujitsu.

The East Coast Jujitsu Course and Championships were a celebration of unity within the Jujitsu community, offering a platform for practitioners of all levels to demonstrate their passion and dedication to this martial art. It was a huge success and we look forward to returning next year.

6th Dan awarded

At the British Ju jitsu Championships presentation night, Sensei Walker was awarded his 6th Dan by Sensei Paul Geoghegan 9th Dan in front the celebrating instructors, officials and the BJJA GB Committee.

Yet another excellent BJJA(GB) National Championships this weekend was topped off, as usual, with our awards dinner at which our high Dan grades are bestowed. Pictured here on the left is Andy Walker of Poole Bushido Club. Andy probably puts more miles in than anyone to attend events and is a shining example to all. Andy is now a very well deserved 6th Dan. On the right is Bushido Barnoldswick’s very own Richard Asbery. Richard began his jujitsu journey in 1976 as a young boy and has toiled relentlessly to this day to reach the dizzy heights of 8th Dan. Both these fine gentlemen continue to train regularly and diligently despite serving many decades and are two of the best role models any aspiring martial artist could possibly have. Well done chaps. It’s a pleasure to know you and an honour to train with you.

Junior Black Belt Grading

Poole Ju jitsu successfully had its first Junior black belt grading at the weekend with Sensei Walker travelling up to Bushido Ju Jitsu headquarters. The successful candidate has been training over the last four months purely on her black belt syllabus.

In the run up to the grading she trained four times a week with female instructor Sensei Karen Nuttall, who pushed the junior candidate each week. This showed during the grading, held under Professor Paul Geoghegan 9th Dan who commented that this was one of the best junior gradings he’s conducted. The judging panel, Sensei Phil Rhodes 7th Dan and Sensei Robert Hope 6th Dan also commented that it was a very good grading.

The Uki’s were Sensei Jay Jones 3rd Dan, Sensei Aaron Abidi 1st Dan, both Wings Bushido, and James Windell  1st Dan – Clone Bushido

14th Kokoro Kai & Wakarishin Ju-jitsu Championships

Poole Ju jitsu attended the 14th Kokoro Kai & Wakarishin Ju jitsu Championships held in Southend-on-Sea on Saturday 7th May 2022.

Eight members travelled to one of the biggest Ju jitsu competitions in the country and what a weekend it was. Junior members were Layla, Adam, Timur, Omina & Abdulloh and with Adult attends were Adam & Sensei Karen (best Uki ever) with Sensei Walker (absolutely best Uki ever).

The course was officially opened by Sensei Mark Fitzgerald and boasted guest instructors and officials from around the UK, Belgium and the United States. The course was a three hour delight with the various instructors teaching on eight packed out mats. After lunch the main event was eagerly underway.

The competition categories which the Poole members entered were Sumo, Ground Fighting, Pairs Demo, Random Attacks & Continuous Fighting.

Little Layla had two categories and while winning one of her bouts didn’t managed to pick up a medal, however she fought well. Next up was young Adam who had to compete against some great talent and was so unlucky at not picking up a medal. Brother & sister duo Omina & Abdulloh competed in the pairs demonstration and managed to gain a bronze medal for a great display. Omina also picked up a bronze medal in ground fighting – a category she’s determined to improve on at the British Championships. Our next medal winner was Timur who took a bronze medal in ground fighting, Timur also won two bouts in the continuous fighting but couldn’t continue due to losing a gum shield. Adult Member Adam won his first round in random attacks but was unfortunately unable to secure a medal this time round. Poole Ju jitsu took 3 bronze medals with six members so overall a great result.

The next major competition is the British Championships in September so the team will be focused on beating the medal tally with some targeted competition training for all those who wish to enter. After that it’ll be the United Nations Championships in Belgium.

Gibraltar Trip April 2022

Gibraltar April 2022

Poole Ju jitsu club arranged to visit its sister club in Gibraltar which is headed by Sensei Tony Joaquin 7th Dan. The seven members who travelled were Sensei Andy Walker, Sensei Luca Infante, Sensei George Pearce & Sensei Karen Nuttall. We also had planned gradings for three junior members – Madi Ward, Leon James & Louisa Hayward.PJJC Gibraltar April 2022

It was an eventful journey to get the team there with flights being diverted to Faro, Portugal and Malaga, Spain but we didn’t let a few challenges stop us in our tracks.

Friday evening saw the three juniors take part in the normal Friday night class taken by Sensei Tony. They were welcomed by the Gibraltarian students which calmed the nerves in readiness for their gradings on Saturday.

Saturday’s course was headed by Sensei Walker who enthralled both the Little Warriors and the Juniors’ class with Uki Sensei Karen (best Uki ever!) working on fun techniques for the little ones.

A range of techniques were taught with a few special workout techniques which the juniors loved and had a go at. All the juniors & little warriors were given a special gift of treats for their efforts by the visiting team and team photographs were taken to mark the occasion. PJJC Gibraltar Adults 24 04 2022

Next up was the adult class led by Sensei Luca & Sensei George with a few little extras from Sensei Walker & Sensei Karen. It was a great display of techniques, both demonstration style and working techniques and all the adults gave their best, working hard to perfect the moves.

We are very proud of Madi and Leon who achieved their Brown belts and Louisa who achieved her Blue belt, all under the watchful eye of Sensei Tony. Each of them performed to their very best during the gradings and represented the club well.

It was a real pleasure bringing Poole Ju jitsu Club to Gibraltar, sharing techniques and building on great relationships with

our sister club. The Gibraltar students were fully engaged and enthusiastic and the course was very well attended by all age groups.

Unfortunately we had to depart on Sunday morning – but not before a fabulous night out. A fantastic meal and a few drinks rounded off the weekend perfectly. Now, where shall we go next?!
